What do vehicle trackers do?

Quite simply put, a vehicle tracker is designed to track vehicles of any kind. Once installed into a vehicle the tracking device will be able to monitor:

  • Movement.
  • Live location position.
  • How the vehicle is being driven.

All whilst on the move via the GPS satellite system. The GPS (Global Positioning System) works in conjunction with Google Maps which uses a combination of satellites in different positions and calculates the distance from several points to pinpoint exactly where you are located in the world. When you use this with a multi-business sim you have full coverage across Europe.

Our vehicle trackers are about the size of a matchbox and are installed under the dashboard for security and aesthetic purposes.

How does vehicle tracking work?

Once the vehicle is switched on the vehicle tracking system bursts into life via the GPS connection with a constant link which will update every minute or if an action happens like a left turn for example. All of the routes the fleet of vehicles takes gets stored which can then be analysed in our series of reports that have been developed over many years based on what managers need from a vehicle tracking system. For example:

  • Travel Report - The classic report that shows any given journey(s) over a specific time frame that looks at:

- Start/stop.

- Overall time taken.

- Distance travelled.

- Time spent at each stop.

- Average speed and idling time.

  • Stop Report - Shows time, location and duration of vehicle stops.
  • Speed Analysis - Shows the road speed classification, the driver's actual speed and percentage difference.

When collating all of this and evaluating driver performances and averages it becomes easy to see where issues might be or drivers that are underperforming.

Going green through vehicle tracking

Our green report was generated to improve business carbon footprints on the journey to be neutral. It offers:

  • Idling time analysis.
  • Event logging which shows driver behaviour, such as:

- Harsh acceleration.

- Erratic braking.

- Overspeeding.

  • CO2 Output.

What this also does is highlight drivers that are the worst offenders and whilst your green stats can be improved this also rather conveniently boosts the businesses' bottom line as fixing these driver behaviours also lowers fuel costs and the longevity of the vehicle's life reducing wear and tear. A car traveling at 56mph rather than 75mph will use 20% less fuel for example so go green and save the planet and your overheads

Driver Trackers for Vehicles

Speed analysis and driver behaviour reports will show:

  • Driving efficiencies as to the optimal route chosen.
  • How well the driver is driving against the legal speed of the road.
  • A points-scoring system is created based on events.
  • Rewards system to encourage good driving practice on the leaderboard.
  • Training for consistent violators to improve skills.

Because the vehicles are tracked 24/7 you can also be notified of any outside working hours activity and allocate a business v personal use for tax purposes as well as recoup costs if vehicles are allowed to be used for personal use but at a cost to the employee.

Tracking vehicle location with alerts

Postcode visit reports and geofenced visits reporting gives you:

  • Peace of mind knowing that your workers are where they are supposed to be.
  • Get alerts based on a specific area like ULEZ or congestion charge zones.
  • Know when a delivery has arrived through geo-fencing.
  • Check the progression of a driver on a run when they reach certain destinations.

By having specific points set up for alerts you can avoid missing charges for example or be able to inform important customers when their deliveries have arrived as well as seeing if anyone is running behind schedule to inform customers of any delays.

Network Rail required reporting around the work so it was great to see how all the information they needed was already available as a report which could be automated and sent on a weekly basis as a travel report and green report to be emissions compliant. They now save 25-30 hours a week overall just in reporting.

The driver behaviour report is powerful. Harsh braking or erratic swerving can lead to items breaking and customer disputes. So, finding out that drivers were not driving carefully allowed us to retrain and educate them on the importance of looking after both the vehicle and the contents leading to a better customer experience.

Vehicle tracking for lorries, trucks & HGVs
